COURSE OVERVIEW

A heavy mist floats, as if the clouds were descending, giving a surreal, medieval feel to the forest that surrounds. Trees of gigantic proportion disappear in to the summer morning fog. This temperate rain forest gives wealth to the remaining Coastal Redwoods that are forever protected in Humboldt County Redwoods State Park, our first visit. Under the shadows of these ancient trees we will discover amazing aspects about them through hands on, dirt under the nails exploration. An excellent backdrop for beginning and ending this fantastic summer trip.

It is known throughout the country as Bigfoot or Sasquatch .A few film clips, hundreds of footprint castings, and the eye-witness accounts are all that we have as actual proof that the creature exists. No where else on earth are there more sightings of Bigfoot than where we shall be leaving our own footprints. Do you believe? A visit to the Bigfoot museum prior to our backpack will help sharpen our observation skills just in case…..

The Marble Mountains lie between the Trinity Alps and the Siskiyou Mountains on the Oregon border. Collectively they amass to form the Klamath Mountain Range. We will hike a steep and pronounced landscape carved from water and ice. Spending twelve days in this remote setting will allow us a complete traverse of the Marbles and provide ample opportunities to fish, watch the clouds roll by, and sit upon a high crest with the world below our boots!

Leaving the mountains behind, we follow the Pacific Crest Trail down to where it crosses the Klamath River. It is near Seiad Valley where we will take the packs off and replace them with lifejacket and paddles. For the next six days we will travel via white water rafts pitting our teamwork skills against class II-IV rapids and “drops” that go by the names of Dragon’s Tooth and Devil’s Toenail. As their confidence and leading skills blossom, students are encouraged to “take command” and be the guide as we bounce down stream.
